Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a main component of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It has more than 3000 years of history. Acupuncture points, distribution of meridians have been documented throughout history.

Acupuncture promotes natural healing and improves many physiological functions by the insertion of sterilized (disposable), stainless-steel needles (that are as fine as a human hair) into  specific points of the body that control the flow of “ Qi “ energy.

The flow of “ Qi” energy is created to along the pathways that connect the acupuncture points on the body. The pathways between the points are called meridians, which also connect to internal organs in the body. When there is a blockage of Qi, the body loses its state of balance and disease develops. Acupuncture aims to treat the body as a whole, unblocking stagnant Qi and promoting full body balance.

Chinese Herbal Medicine

Herbal therapy is important in traditional Chinese medicine. It has been used for centuries in China, where herbs are considered fundamental therapy for many acute and chronic conditions. Like acupuncture, Chinese herbs can address unhealthy body patterns that manifest in a variety of symptoms and complaints. The aims of Chinese herbal therapy are to help you regain balance in your body and to strengthen your body’s resistance to disease.

Chinese herbal therapy can also be valuable following cancer treatment to aid the body’s recovery from the after-effects of chemotherapy and/or radiation. Chinese herbs are useful in the rehabilitation from many chronic diseases, as well. Chinese herbal therapy may be recommended when you have multiple symptoms or symptoms that are hard to pinpoint, or if you have exhausted traditional medical options and nothing seems to help. Chinese herbal medicine may also be useful when you need therapy to counteract side effects of prescription medications. Chinese herbal therapy is beneficial as preventive medicine.

Acupressure

Acupressure is an ancient form of massage that is one of the treatment methods used in Traditional Chinese Medicine. The goal of acupressure (as well as other Chinese Medicine treatments), is to encourage the movement of qi ("life energy") through the 14 channels (meridians) inside the body.

Acupressure consists of pressing the acupuncture points in an attempt to help the free flow of energy in the channel(s). Acupressure is similar to acupuncture, but the person uses their fingers instead of needles to work the point. During a treatment or self treatment, a person will experience a slight pain when the proper acupuncture point is pressed. Acupressure can be very effective in helping with nausea and vomiting after surgery or invasive medical procedures. Acupressure can also help in reducing the pain.

Tui Na

Tuina (also known as "tui na") is a type of alternative therapy long used in traditional Chinese medicine, a form of alternative medicine that originated in China. Tuina involves the use of several types of bodywork, including massage and acupressure.

Tuina is thought to help stimulate the flow of vital energy (called "chi") throughout your body. According to the principles of traditional Chinese medicine, health problems occur when the flow of chi is blocked at any point along a meridian (an invisible line that connects your organs with other parts of your body). By removing these blockages, tuina is said to restore your body's balance of chi and, in turn, improve your health.

Cupping

Cupping therapy is an ancient form of alternative medicine in which a therapist puts special cups on your skin for a few minutes to create suction. People get it for many purposes, including to help with pain, inflammation, blood flow, relaxation and well-being, and as a type of deep-tissue massage.

Cupping therapy might be trendy now, but it’s not new. It dates back to ancient Egyptian, Chinese, and Middle Eastern cultures. As the air inside the cup cools, it creates a vacuum. This causes your skin to rise and redden as your blood vessels expand. The cup is generally left in place for a few minutes. Cupping therapy believe that wet cupping removes harmful substances and toxins from the body to promote healing.

Gua Sha

Gua Sha is a traditional Chinese practice that would traditionally be performed by stimulating the skin with hard-sided items such as jade or bone. It is a practice that could be a cousin to acupuncture and massage but emphasizes the direct localized force of the item on the skin of the patient. It works to increase the blood flow under the skin and the circulation in the soft tissue under the skin. This, in turn, has numerous positive effects on the body including anti-inflammatory and immune system benefits.

While traditional gua sha practitioners used jade or bone, your therapist will likely use a gua massage tool.  Your visit with a gua sha practitioner may seem short compared to a massage or physical therapy session. You may only receive treatment for approximately ten minutes. Your practitioner will use oil or another lubricant to minimize abrasions and will work to identify problem areas.  After a gua sha session, you may have red marks on your skin. The scraping of the skin can cause capillaries near the skin to burst, but these will disappear within a couple days. It is important to note that gua sha may not be appropriate for people who have blood conditions or disorders.
